Ronald joined the Airforce, Bomber Command, 50th Squadron in the late fall of 1941. He was shipped out to England in 1942. He was assigned to the 50th Squadron initially as Flight Sergeant, Commissioned Pilot Officer. He rose one more rank to finally be Flying Officer and did a number of bombing missions as pilot of a Lancaster Bomber. He was shot down in September 1943 and was incarcerated in Stolag Luft 3 with Jimmy Kanelakos for the remainder of the war, (18 months total) until liberated in April 1945. He was honorably discharged in the summer of 1945.
