Enlisted in Lanark Feb 22, 1916, at age 18. Was in Convalescent Camp suffering from trench fever and wrote in his diary daily. In Jan 1917 he was in Le Harve, and spoke of being in the trenches, the bitter cold, having a good smoke, letters from home, sore feet, and seeing a burning plane come down. He said a mine went off and gassed some men, narrowly missing him, He trained as a gunner and talked of being on the front lines. On April 9, 1917, his entry read, went over the top. Took three line of trenches, was a wet day. Seen an airplane come down. " On Mar 27, 1918 Henry's entry, "stood to in morning. Just got down the trench and got wounded with Rum Jar. Went to clearing station to take shrapnel out. Was a fine day. He never was on the lines again. IN WWII, Henry served in the Veterans Guard of Canada for 5 years.
