LCol Armstrong began his career as a reservist in 1958 serving the 59th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment in Perth On. He joined the Regular Army in September 1962. Upon completing his training in Shilo, Manitoba, LCol Armstrong was posted to 1RCH on Gagetown and later Germany. In 1979 he had the first of two UK tours at Royal School of Artillery Larkhill where he graduated as an instructor in gunnery. His second British tour was at the Military College of Science in Shrivenham where he graduated in 1975. Between these 2 tours was a posting to RCHA in Petawawa. He served for a considerable time at NDHQ in the Large Calibre Weapons Engineering and Maintenance Branch where he ended his Reg force career in 1990. LCol Armstrong rejoined the Regiment in 1991 as the OC A Company and then as Second in Command. On June 20, 1993 he assumed the position of Commanding Officer from LCol D. Frausell and on September 20, 1997 he passed on the command to Major S. M. Fritz-Millett.
