RCAF 401 squadron R67153 - Bill Hagyard was the first fatality of the Perth area in the second world war. His plane was shot down over the English channel and his body was never recovered. The night before his last flight he spent the evening in London with his childhood friend, Ivan Penfold, He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. His name also appears in the WWII book of remembrance maintained by Veteran Affairs Canada. A plaque in his honour was created and has been displayed in Ottawa. It is currently being kept by the department of History at Western University and is planned for public display.
