Philip was a member of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, 130th Battalion and served in Ypres, Passchendaele and Vimy, in the role of army medic and paymaster. In 1924, he was employed as Bridgemaster of the Tay Branch of the Rideau Canal until his death in 1946. He designed and personally created the "Crest" on the bank of the Tay Basin below the Gore Street Bridge. This design was based on a replica that he saw while stationed at the army base at Valcartier Quebec, ( before he headed overseas).
