Joe joined the Navy in September 1941, at the age of 17. He turned 18 on November 5, 1941. He served in the navy with his brother Jack and served for 3 years. He was posted on the HMCS MIMICO, a corvette that was taking part in the invasion of France. While in the Navy, he sent home $30 per month to build a nest egg. Unfortunately, his parents, Frank and Mary, fell on hard times and had to use his money as their business went bankrupt. Joe had 3 other brothers who served in the forces; Pte. William F. Publow, RCOC in England, Stoker John E. Publow, RCNVR of Deep Brook Nova Scotia and Trooper Charles P. Publow at Camp Borden.
