Carmen voluntarily enlisted in the Canadian Army on July 20, 1943 at the age of 17. He then trained at Camp Borden where he became a Class III driver in November 1943. On March 25, 1944, Carmen embarked at Windsor, Nova Scotia and reported for duty in the UK on April 3 1944, where he was active in Tactical Operations System, Special Operations Squadron, Canadian Infantry Reinforcement Unit and the Canadian Armored Corps Reinforcement Unit. In June 1944 he embarked in the UK and disembarked in France where he subsequently suffered a chest would as well as injuries to his right leg from shrapnel while on the front line. Following his discharge from the hospital, he returned to active duty. When the war ended, Carmen returned to Canada where he received an Honorable discharge on September 28, 1945, after having served with the Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry Unit of the Canadian Armed Forces.
